Good Neighbours Gardening Volunteer

North Tyneside VODA

Join the Good Neighbours Project – Help Make a Garden Safer and Brighter * Please note gardening only takes place between April and September*

The Good Neighbours Project recruits, trains, and supports volunteers to carry out practical, neighbourly tasks that make a real difference. One key focus is helping with gardens that may pose a safety risk to residents—especially when overgrown paths or neglected spaces become difficult to manage.

For individuals who are disabled, living alone, or facing challenges, keeping on top of outdoor spaces can be overwhelming—especially without someone to turn to for help.

We’re looking for volunteers to take part in one-off garden tidy-ups. Tasks may include:

  • Cutting back hedges
  • Clearing slippery or overgrown paths
  • Weeding
  • Simple fence or gate repairs

If you have a few practical skills, a willingness to help, and a compassionate heart, we’d love to hear from you.

What skills do I need?

As a Gardening Volunteer, you’ll be asked to:

  • Help with one-off tidy-ups of clients' gardens, making outdoor spaces safer and more manageable
  • Work independently or as part of a small team, depending on the task and your preference
  • Let us know if someone might need extra support—we can connect them with the right services
  • Complete a short report after each visit so the Good Neighbours project team stays updated and can provide any necessary follow-up
