Group volunteer

Stroke North

We are looking for volunteers to assist with

  • making teas and coffees
  • setting up games and activities
  • assisting members of the group

Meetings begin with a chat over a cup of tea or coffee, followed by one of the different activities. We offer a variety of activities, including quizzes, table top games e.g Dominoes, draughts, Beetle, Card Bingo, art and crafts, floor games such as Boccia (a type of bowls), Kurling. We arrange speakers on various topics and organise visits to places of interest.

One member made the following observation:

“I’m not the easiest person to know, I’m in a wheelchair and my speech isn’t good. I’m sure that alone does a lot for my mood. After 20 years of hiding at home, I was frightened in case I lowered the tone. Low self-esteem is what the Doctor said. But instead of meds, I joined this group instead. So, I wanted to say thank you, and say you’re doing just fine. Just remember to people like me you are all my lifeline.”

What skills do I need?

  • ability to understand the needs of people after stroke
  • memory loss, confusion, visual impairment etc
  • empathy with members

About Stroke North

Stroke North is a charity providing a safe environment for people and their carers living life after stroke. We meet on the second and fourth Friday of each month for social activities, discussions, games and fun. This enables members to share their experience of stroke with others and learn how stroke has impacted upon others and measures taken to ameliorate problems. In a recent survey of members, one commented that Stroke North is their lifeline.
