Kitchen Assistant

Family Gateway

Family Gateway volunteers make a vital contribution to our aims. We recognise the added value that volunteers bring to our organisation and those who use our services. Our volunteers inform our work and help us to develop, and we can support volunteers to learn skills and achieve personal development during their time with us. We recruit volunteers using our “Barefoot Professional Model” which means we recruit people from our local community who have a range of life experiences that they can use to support other people who come to Family Gateway for support. A description of the Bread and Butter Thing volunteer role is below.

Howdelicious is a community café based at Howdon Hub, serving affordable and nutritious food to our community. Our motto is ‘Food with a Social Purpose ‘

As our Kitchen Assistant volunteer, you would be an integral part of our team providing some delicious ‘home cooked’ food.

Duties include:

Set up/clear away the kitchen following our opening/closing checks.

Support with food preparation in line with the current menu.

Be allergen aware, ensure safe food preparation in line with customer dietary requirements.

Contribute to ensuring a clean and safe kitchen & cafe environment.

Wash dishes/load/unload dish washer.

Support with stock and ordering.

Record keeping in line with Environmental Health requirements.

Reporting repairs/issues needed

What skills do I need?

Skills

· Well presented with a friendly and cheerful persona.

· Good personal hygiene standards, tidy and organised

· Ability to work as a team.

· Good communication skills (oral &written)

· Good time management skills.

· Basic numeracy skills.

· Basic knowledge of food preparation.

· Basic knowledge of food hygiene.

· Basic knowledge of allergens.

· An awareness of health & safety issues in a kitchen/café environment.
