Why volunteer as a SMART Facilitator?
Becoming a SMART Family & Friends Facilitator can be rewarding as well as beneficial in helping with your own recovery from a loved one's addictive behaviour. Providing and gaining support alongside those who share similar experiences and goals is what makes mutual aid so powerful. Sharing experiences with others not only helps us with our own situations but also brings comfort and hope in the knowledge we are not facing them on our own.
What skills do I need?
We ask that all Facilitators:
- have lived experience of a family member or friend with addictive behaviours
- have attended online or face to face Family & Friends meetings before, ideally at least 5 of them
- have experience of co-facilitating meetings, or be willing to co-facilitate initially
- are at a stable position in their own life
- are able to commit wholeheartedly to SMART Recovery values
- complete the 'Introduction to SMART Recovery' and 'Getting SMART' training modules on our website prior to application https://training.smartrecovery.org.uk/
The following skills will help in carrying out this role:
- communication skills, with the ability to engage others
- organisational skills, able to manage your own time and lead a balanced life
- being a team player, willing to work with volunteers and staff for the good of SMART Recovery and meeting participants
- being willing to act as an ambassador for UK SMART Recovery and help to build its reputation
- being self-motivated, able to make a regular commitment of time and energy.
