SMART Recovery Mutual-Aid Meeting Facilitator

UK SMART Recovery

Help people in their recovery from addiction as a SMART Recovery Facilitator.

This role involves the following:

  • setting up a meeting in your local area, identifying a suitable venue, promoting the meeting, and recruiting volunteers to help with practical tasks
  • completing admin tasks including a monthly survey and recording donations
  • managing meetings by preparing the room, greeting participants, and tidying up at the end
  • facilitating meetings by setting the agenda, overseeing the discussion and managing challenging participants
  • encouraging others to think about training to become Facilitators.

Why volunteer as a SMART Facilitator?

SMART facilitation can be a fascinating and absorbing journey. Many of the skills learned can help in other areas of life, including the world of work. Often SMART Facilitators build on their experience of running meetings to take on other leadership roles within the recovery community. Volunteer SMART Recovery Facilitators see remarkable changes in many of the people who attend meetings, and know that although recovery is an individual's choice and responsibility, as a SMART Recovery Facilitator they have been able to make a difference.

What skills do I need?

We ask that all Facilitators:

  • have attended SMART Recovery meetings before, ideally at least 5 of them
  • have experience of co-facilitating meetings, or be willing to co-facilitate initially
  • are at a stable position in their own recovery
  • are able to commit wholeheartedly to SMART Recovery values
  • complete the 'Introduction to SMART Recovery' and 'Getting SMART' training modules on our website prior to application: https://training.smartrecovery.org.uk/

The following skills will help in carrying out this role:

  • communication skills, with the ability to engage others
  • organisational skills, able to manage your own time and lead a balanced life
  • being a team player, willing to work with volunteers and staff for the good of SMART Recovery and meeting participants
  • being willing to act as an ambassador for UK SMART Recovery and help to build its reputation
  • being self-motivated, able to make a regular commitment of time and energy.
