Buggy Driver Volunteer

What is the purpose of the role?

The volunteer will transport Patients, Visitors, around the hospital as requested, as a free service for the hospital voluntary services. This service is operated 7 days a week and is run solely by volunteers.

What support and training will be provided?

· Full Volunteer Recruitment Process

· Volunteer Induction training

· Full buggy training/incident/accident reporting

· Specific training for the role eg: the driver is provided with a one way bleep to receive and respond to requests from hospital staff, wards and departments within the hospital

· Regular and on going support from a named member of staff

· On going training as the role requires

· Out of pocket expenses are reimbursed in accordance with Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust Volunteering Policy

Note: The buggy service requires batteries to be recharged each evening so the driver on the evening shift must put the vehicle on charge before he/she leaves. Similarly the volunteer on the morning shift must collect the buggy from the charging point. Instruction will be given to all volunteers

What skills do I need?

This might be the role for you if:

· You are confident to talk to Patients/families

· You enjoy chatting with people and putting them at ease

· You have excellent listening skills

· You are empathetic and non-judgemental

· Full clean driving licence

· Can provide one morning, afternoon or evening per week

What skills, knowledge and experience might you gain through this role?

· Confidence and increased knowledge of a Hospital

· Social skills and inter-personal skills

· An awareness and understanding of disability

· Reliable and trustworthy

· Ability to approach Patients/Visitors in a confident and considerate manner

· Sensitive and tactful nature

Location: North Tyneside General hospital and Wansbeck General hospital

A DBS check at an enhanced level is required for this role
